In June this year, six 270,000 cubic meters LNG (liquefied natural gas) storage tanks, the world’s largest single-use LNG liquefied natural gas, were under construction at the Binhai Port Industrial Park in Yancheng, Jiangsu province, it indicates that the design and construction technology of super-large LNG storage tank in China has achieved a breakthrough and reached the global level. The project is an expansion of four 220,000 cubic meters tanks in the first phase of the LNG project. When completed, the Binhai Port Industrial Park will have 10 giant tanks with a capacity of 490,000 cubic meters. Located on the coastal plain, just across the Nantong River from Shanghai, Yancheng’s LNG reserves can be shipped to Nantong and Shanghai, making it a clean energy reservoir in the Yangtze River Delta.
The liquefied natural gas is a liquefied substance AT-162 °C, and the containers in which it is stored and the pipes through which it is transported are made of extremely low temperature resistant materials, the low-temperature materials with practical application value are aluminum and aluminum alloy, nickel steel and stainless steel (SUS 304) . They have no low-temperature brittleness, especially all aluminum alloys have no low-temperature brittleness, most steels, however, have low-temperature brittleness, and while their strength increases with decreasing temperature, their plasticity (ductility) decreases considerably, making them hard and brittle and of no practical value.
There are three types of LNG storage tanks: underground, aboveground and shipboard. In either case, it consists of an aluminum shell and a thick insulating layer that insulates the tank from heat from the outside and heats it up. Yancheng Binhai Port Industrial Park Phase I and Phase II super-volumed storage tanks are above ground, mostly made of 5083 alloy, each tank uses more than 1,100 tons of aluminum, the use of plates, accounting for 82% , the tank body, tank bottom and tank top are all welded with plates, the thickness of the plate is 6ー70 mm, and the top frame of the tank is welded and assembled with extruded profiles. The mass is about 50 t, accounting for 9.2% . Some pipes, castings, die castings and forgings are used, accounting for 8.8% . China is a country that needs to import a lot of LNG and natural gas, and also needs to build some LNG and natural gas storage base and transshipment base in border areas and cities in Binhai, and the demand for aluminium for storage tanks will continue to rise.
